Sheffield United are set to take David McGoldrick on trial, according to The Sheffield Star.

Signing a striker is Chris Wilder's priority this summer and he is now running the rule over McGoldrick ahead of a potential free transfer.

McGoldrick has been without a club since his contract with Ipswich Town expired at the end of June, bringing an end to his five year stay with the Tractor Boys.

During his time at Portman Road, the 6-cap Republic of Ireland international scored 45 goals in 161 games but last season was hampered with numerous injury concerns.

Aston Villa are also considering a swoop for the 30-year-old, who has also played for Southampton, Nottingham Forest and Coventry City in his career.

Sheffield United will take a look at McGoldrick over the course of a week-long trial before making their decision.

Their other options are Sam Gallagher - who they are trying to secure a free transfer for - and Scott Hogan - a loan target.

The Verdict

McGoldrick is a decent back-up choice to have behind Leon Clarke and Billy Sharp.

If the Blades can also secure Gallagher on a free or Hogan on loan, then they would have a really potent attacking quartet to choose from.

If he impresses on trial, he is worth a low-risk punt on a free transfer and a one-year deal.
