Sheffield United have recalled winger Nathan Thomas from his loan spell with Notts County and immediately sent him back out for a second stint in League Two with Carlisle United.

Thomas moved to the County Ground in the summer on a season-long loan but failed to have the desired impact as the Magpies sunk to the bottom of the fourth-tier table, with Thomas only managing one goal himself in 29 appearances.

The 24-year-old will now have a chance to redeem himself with Steven Pressley's high-flying side, with Carlisle currently sat fourth in the League Two table.

Thomas signed for the Blades from Hartlepool United in the summer of 2017 for around £300,000 but has gone on to make just three competitive appearances for Chris Wilder's side.

He becomes the fourth player to leave Bramall Lane this month with Daniel Lafferty, Lee Evans and Harvey Gilmour also leaving.

The Blades currently sit in third place in the Championship table and just three points behind Norwich City who occupy the final automatic promotion spot.

The verdict

I think this makes complete sense.

Notts County is never going to be a good environment for a player to develop and I think United have been very sensible here.

Carlisle looks set to be a much better environment for the attacker.
