Sheffield United confirm off-field Bramall Lane departure

Sheffield United have confirmed that they have signed off the paperwork for Alan Knill to depart the club after five years of service at Bramall Lane.

The 56-year-old has served as Assistant Manager in South Yorkshire since 2016 and has been part of a really successful period in the Blades’ recent history.

As per the club’s website, they’ve agreed to Knill’s departure, releasing a statement: “United can confirm that Alan Knill has left the club, by mutual consent.

“Assistant manager since 2016, the paperwork has been completed in the last 24 hours to enable him to leave Bramall Lane with immediate effect.

“The board would like to thank Alan for his hard work and wish him well for the future.”

Knill served as Chris Wilder’s assistant at Bramall Lane, with Sheffield United winning promotion and the League One title in the 2016/17 campaign.

A year of adapting to life back in the Championship teed the Blades up for more success in 2018/19, with Wilder leading the club to second and automatic promotion after an intense battle with Leeds United and Norwich City.

The following season would see Sheffield Untied achieve a top-10 finish in the Premier League.

However, their second season in the Premier League was tough going, with the Blades eventually relegated. Wilder left in March 2021, with Knill staying on alongside Paul Heckingbottom.

Sheffield United, though, are heading in a different direction on their Championship return, linking up with Slavisa Jokanovic on a three-year deal.

What scoreline did Sheffield United record the last time they played a competitive game at Bramall Lane?

The Verdict

Knill has been a really good servant at Sheffield United over the course of the last five years, but with Jokanovic coming in, it perhaps is the natural time for him to move on.

He was part of Wilder’s backroom team and the club are, ultimately, heading in a different direction now.

What Sheffield United fans will remember Knill for is a hugely successful recent period, where the club defied the odds to go from League One to the Premier League.

That journey will live long in the memory.
