Sheffield United have confirmed that striker Leon Clarke has officially joined Wigan Athletic on loan for the rest of the season.

Clarke has fallen down the pecking order in Chris Wilder's side recently, and found regular game time hard to come by at Bramall Lane.

With the arrival of Gary Madine this month, it only pushed the 33-year-old further down the pecking order at Sheffield United, and it will come as no surprise to see him heading for the exit door.

Clarke has become a firm fan favourite, despite a number of concerns when the Blades first signed him, having previously played for rivals, Sheffield Wednesday.

But having scored 31 goals in 91 appearances for Sheffield United since joining from Bury in 2016, it's clear to see why he established himself as a favourite amongst the Bramall Lane faithful.

He netted 19 goals last season and formed an impressive partnership with Billy Sharp as the Blades narrowly missed out on a top six finish, which would have been bitterly disappointing after such a strong start to the season.

It's unlikely that the door will remain closed for Clarke, and if he can score goals to keep Wigan in the Championship this season, then he could give Wilder a selection dilemma on his return in the summer.

The Verdict

This is an excellent signing for the Latics.

They are in need of additional attacking firepower up-front, and Clarke will certainly provide them with that for the remainder of the season.

He could have a future with Sheffield United if he can make a notable impact with Wigan for the rest of this year's campaign.
