Wolves midfielder Lee Evans is having a medical with Sheffield United as he closes in on a move to the Yorkshire club.

Evans, who has one cap for Wales, has spent the first half of the season on loan at League One leaders Wigan Athletic, playing a key role for the Latics.

However, the Black Country side had a recall clause and have done so, with the Blades set to pay around £750,000 for the midfielder. Whilst Wigan were also interested they couldn't match the offer from the Championship club.

According to Football Insider, the 23-year old is undergoing a medical today and the switch should be announced in the next 24 hours.

It will be a much-needed addition for the Blades who have seriously struggled since Paul Coutts broke his leg against Burton Albion back in mid-November.

Whilst they were challenging for an automatic promotion spot at the time, an awful run has seen Chris Wilder's men start go into the New Year outside the play-offs.

Evans is expected to be joined at Sheffield United by Southen midfielder Ryan Leonard.

The Verdict

This looks like a good deal for all concerned. Evans quite simply isn't anywhere near the Wolves team and wasn't ever likely to feature once they signed Ruben Neves who is the deep-lying playmaker.

However, Evans deserves credit for going to Wigan and doing so well and it has presented him with a great opportunity to play for a side pushing for promotion to the Premier League.

He still has a lot to prove and will fit into the style of player that Chris Wilder signs and looks to develop. Now, it's up to the Welsh international to help fill the big gap left by Coutts.
