Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder has hinted that contract offers could be on the table for several players very soon, following the extension of midfielder John Fleck’s deal.

The Blades boss, fresh off the back of a convincing Steel City Derby win over fierce rivals Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough, has said that if his side’s good form continues in the coming weeks, then he will consider offering out new deals.

Former Rangers man Fleck was honoured with new terms following an excellent start to the campaign, and Wilder has challenged other players to impress him another to be offered new deals.

In an interview with The Yorkshire Post ahead of his side’s Championship clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers, he cited the example of Premier League Bournemouth as a possible inspiration for his players, and the rise of Harry Arter from non-league footballer to Premier League star.

He said: ““I always say, even though we are a million miles off where they are at the moment, to look at Bournemouth. They are a great example of bringing players through with you. Harry Arter was with Woking and look at him now. That is what can happen.”

The Verdict

The Blades have enjoyed a wonderful start to the new campaign, and victory tonight over Wolves could see the club rise as high as second place.

Wilder will be delighted with the output of his side, and as he says, will begin to reward his players for their fine form in the coming weeks with improved deals if they can maintain their excellent start.

There is a long way to go this season before the Blades are considered promotion candidates, but keep this form up, and a top-six finish is certainly not out of the question.
