Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder is targeting quality over quantity this summer as he looked to improve his squad.

The Blades are aiming to build on an impressive 10th place finish in their first season back in the Championship after a six-year absence. They were boosted by the news that Wilder has extended his stay at the club after receiving assurances from the owners.

Improving on last season will be tough, though, which is why new personnel are needed in order to make their recent success a sustainable platform to build from rather than it being an anomaly.

Here's what Wilder had to say about his summer targets to Sheffield United's official site: "We're looking for quality additions now, we're not going to be making big changes, given a lot of players have got that last year under their belt."

"The likes of Fleck, Stevens, O'Connell, Evans, Brooks, Lundstram will all be better for a season in the division and if we add a bit more to it then we will be in a stronger position."

"There have been a couple of offers for certain available players and as always we will make the right decisions for Sheffield United, as we try and keep a trim and healthy squad."

The Verdict

Wilder has the right approach for this window because the squad has plenty of depth, but they started to reach their limits last season. Therefore, proven quality at this level is needed if they want to carry on improving.

He has made a name for himself at being able to find bargains with League One a key area. However, the issue now for Wilder is whether he can translate that knowledge to higher quality players as well as whether they will be able to fit seamlessly into the squad because he asks a lot of the players in order to maintain their strong collective shape.
