Chris Wilder has revealed that Sheffield United have hardly touched the money they received from the sale of David Brooks, despite significantly strengthening their squad.

Brooks was a high-profile departure earlier in the summer, with the talented forward heading to AFC Bournemouth in a deal worth a reported £11.5m, according to Sky Sports.

Dean Henderson and Ben Woodburn have arrived on-loan at Bramall Lane, whilst David McGoldrick has also been added to Wilder’s playing squad.

A club-record transfer-fee was spent on John Egan from Brentford, whilst today, Kean Bryan has linked up with the Blades on a three-year deal.

Despite the addition of five new first-team players, Wilder has revealed that the money received from Bournemouth for Brooks has hardly been touched this summer.

Speaking to the BBC about the club’s budget and summer transfer window, Wilder said:

“We’re in a position to use the increased budget we’ve got from last year, and I’ve got to say, we’ve hardly touched the David Brooks money, so we’re in a great position.

“I think that’s a skill. That allows us to grow and allows us to improve and that allows us to bring better players into the football club.”

Last season, with Brooks on board, Wilder led the Blades to 10th in the Championship table.

The Blades fell out of play-off contention during the final weeks of the season, but made a strong impression on their return to the second-tier.

Wilder’s side begin the 2018/19 campaign over the weekend when they welcome Swansea City to Bramall Lane on Saturday evening.

The Verdict

This is encouraging news from Wilder, who is extremely honest in this interview.

The fact that the Blades have conducted such fantastic business, without breaking the bank, must be applauded.

The money available from Brooks’ sale should mean Wilder can be active in the coming week.
