Sheffield United boss makes bold statement ahead of the run-in

Chris Wilder has played up the importance of the coming week in the Sky Bet Championship, as his Sheffield United side go in search of play-off football.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Post, Wilder has described the coming week as big for the Blades, as they look to put themselves back in control of their play-off hopes.

Bad weather earlier this month denied the Blades the opportunity to take on Burton Albion, with that game in-hand set to be played tonight, with the Brewers travelling to Bramall Lane.

Ahead of the weekend’s fixtures, Wilder’s side sit ninth, five points adrift of Middlesbrough.

Victory this evening will cut that gap, with Boro not in action.

Following tonight’s clash, the Blades are once again in action at Bramall Lane, taking on Nottingham Forest on Saturday before March’s international break.

Discussing a huge week, Wilder said: “There is no getting away from the fact this is a big week for the football club.

“Two home games on the bounce where our form has generally been good and the support has been right behind us.

“All we are thinking about is getting points and being in the scrap heading into the home straight, which is what we are into now.”

A big week of action at Bramall Lane has been made bigger by two poor results for Wilder’s side, who are without a victory in their last two.

The Blades were well beaten by Fulham last Tuesday, before Ipswich Town held them to a goalless draw at Portman Road on Saturday afternoon.

The Verdict

Sheffield United’s season certainly is reaching breaking point, and two victories this week will put them right in the hunt to secure promotion.

Middlesbrough are playing well, but Wilder’s side have the perfect opportunity to pile the pressure on their rivals tonight against Burton and then again on Saturday against Forest.

Wilder will be drilling it into his side how vital the next week is.
