Sheffield United suffered a disappointing home loss to promotion rivals Bristol City on Friday evening, with Lee Johnson’s men running out 2-1 winners at Bramall Lane.

The result saw the Blades fall to sixth-place, and Chris Wilder’s side extend their winless run to a concerning four games.

The manager made two changes to the side that lost to Millwall the week before, with George Baldock returning from injury at full-back, and Simon Moore replacing Jamal Blackman between the sticks.

The Chelsea loanee had struggled in recent losses to the Lions and to Fulham, making mistakes that cost Wilder’s side points on the day.

Moore came back in and performed well despite defeat, with Wilder justifying his decision to the club’s official website.

“We have to have genuine competition, and we’ve talked to Jam (Blackman) and now it’s up to him to get his standards back up,” Wilder said.

“Simon had trained well and it was right.

“I have to make decisions, and everybody recognises I’m not going to make the easy one.

“I believe those decisions were justified.”

The Verdict

Blackman has hit a tough patch of form, and with the equally adept Moore waiting in the wings, Wilder absolutely made the right call to bring the former Brentford man into the fold.

The Blades have finally hit a difficult spell, and decisions like these need to be made to drag the club from their struggles, and Moore is likely to resume in goal in their next fixture.

Moore did well, making several key saves to keep the Blades in the tie, and Blackman has it all to do if he is to regain his spot.

If Moore continues to impress, then he could be between the sticks for the foreseeable future.
