Birmingham City opened their Championship season, where they are surely hoping to engineer massive improvement from last time around, which saw them narrowly avoid the drop on the last day of the season, with a 1-0 defeat at Ipswich Town.

Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy, who is embroiled in a long-running stand-off with the club's fanbase, and had to pick the players up after a 6-1 pre-season thrashing at the hands of League 1 Charlton Athletic, was handed a much needed boost by debutante Joe Garner's second half goal, which secured the victory.

The Blues, meanwhile, drew a blank, and manager Harry Redknapp largely blamed that on a lack of attacking options on the bench, with his familiar 'we're down to the bare bones' routine being deployed at its usual stage of the season, in order to get the club's owners to dip into their pockets.

Birmingham fans reacted in a mixed way to the result - but many felt that Redknapp needs to make additions to his squad, most notably in the attacking department if Birmingham are to challenge this season.

Some stayed positive, stating that there is no need to panic and additions may yet come in, but others stated that they really are not confident for the season ahead.
