Derby County return to Championship action tomorrow evening when they play host to Leonid Slutsky’s Hull City at Pride Park.
Gary Rowett’s men have made a solid if unspectacular start to the new season with two wins from their opening five matches, with successes over Preston North End and Bolton Wanderers intertwined with defeats at the hands of Wolves and Sheffield United.
That 3-1 loss at Bramall Lane prior to the international break would have given Rams chief Rowett much to think about over the fortnight’s interruption, but they will look to get back to winning ways when Slutsky’s Hull, currently eighth in the table, travel to the East Midlands on Friday.
However, Derby will have to do it without midfielder Maikel Kieftenbeld, as a statement on the Rams’ official website has confirmed that a deal for the Birmingham City man has fallen through, and thus he has returned to St Andrew’s.
The 27-year-old was signed by Rowett while in charge of the Blues back in 2015 and has since then made 91 appearances for the club, although it did look like he was on his way to Pride Park on deadline day to once again link up with the 43-year-old.
And news of the collapsed deal has sparked quite a reaction from Derby supporters on Twitter, with many disappointed and frustrated with their club…

Wow, pretty much sums up the club. We look very short for numbers in midfield and I bet there’s no recall in the Bryson loan. What a joke.
