Sheffield Wednesday's promotion hopes have suffered a huge setback this month, after Carlos Carvalhal's team picked up just one point from their past three games.

The Owls looked dead-set for the play-offs around a month ago but some poor form throughout the whole of March has seen them lose pace with the teams ahead of them, with the likes of Fulham, Norwich and Preston all looking to overtake them in the coming weeks.

And you wouldn't put it past the likes of Preston and Fulham, who have both been in excellent form over the past few weeks.

But despite losing some form in recent weeks, Sheffield Wednesday still have some cracking players on their books and if they were to fall at the final hurdle this season, you can bet they'll be in and amongst it again next time out.

But in this article, we want to open the history books and take a look at some of the players Wednesday really did move on too quickly.

So with that in mind, here's the FIVE players that Sheffield Wednesday were way too quick to sell.....

Jacques Maghoma

Considering Wednesday let Jacques Maghoma leave on a free at the start of the 2015 season, you can forgive some Wednesday fans for really thinking the Congolese winger was let go far too easily and far too early too.

The pacy forward has been a big part of Birmingham City's starting XI for the past couple of seasons now and you wonder whether he could have still done a job at promotion-chasing Wednesday this season, especially when things have dried up in the forward ranks.

Nigel Pearson

Of course, in more recent times, Nigel Pearson is known for his managerial spells with Leicester City and Derby County but back as a player, he had a pretty significant spell with Sheffield Wednesday during his playing days.

A towering defender, he loved getting stuck in and was one of the players Wednesday fans will probably remember for his heart, desire and fight in the first-team.

Left for Middlesbrough in 1994, with many Owls fans thinking he probably had more time at the top-level.

Roland Nilsson

Another defender, the name of now Sweden U17's boss Roland Nilsson is still sung around the terraces at Hillsborough as much now as it was twenty years ago.

The popular defender was instrumental during the early 90's and his cool, collective approach to defending made his £370,000 transfer fee look like a real snip.

He left in 1994 to return to Sweden, with many Owls fans wishing he would have stayed on in Yorkshire.

Paolo Di Canio

Arguably the biggest trophy signing in Wednesday's history, Paolo Di Canio arrived at Hillsborough in the summer of 1997 for around £4million.

He's one of the most exciting players to have ever pulled on the blue and white jersey and his unpredictable and charismatic persona always made things interesting.

Even at his temporamental worst he was a joy to watch and he eventually left the club after going on strike in protest at the lack of support offered to him by the club.

One of the hardest outgoings in Wednesday history.

Gary Madine

Now doing well with Bolton Wanderers, some Wednesday fans felt Gary Madine was let go far too early from his spell with the Owls.

He single-handedly spearheaded the push for League One promotion in the 2011-2012 season and despite losing a little form in campaigns after that, he remained banging in goals and was a big part of this Wednesday side.

He was eventually sold to Bolton Wanderers at the start of the 2015 season.
