Serie A outfit Fiorentina are set to be successful with a last-ditch attempt to land Aston Villa midfielder Jordan Veretout ahead of Saint-Etienne, reports The Birmingham Mail.
The 24-year-old moved to Villa Park back in 2015 as former boss Tim Sherwood tried to build a squad capable of staying in the Premier League, yet it wasn’t to be as the Villans were relegated with just 17 points from their 38 league games.
And Veretout hardly covered himself in glory either by failing to net in his 25 appearances that season, and he was then shipped out on loan to Saint-Etienne last summer to demonstrate his lowly position in the pecking order at the Midlands outfit.
And it seemed that the Ligue 1 club were on the verge of securing a permanent deal for the Frenchman earlier this week, yet recent reports suggest that he is indeed on his way to Serie A side Fiorentina.
The Italian club finished eighth in the top-flight last season yet only ten points behind fifth place Lazio, who secured the final of two Europa League group stage spots as a result.
Yet with a few reinforcements Fiorentina could certainly bridge that gap next term, and they clearly feel that Veretout, who scored four goals and laid on five assists for Saint-Etienne last time out, can aid them in that quest.
Ultimately, things just haven’t worked out for the 24-year-old at Villa Park, with a fresh start certainly needed in his bid to resurrect a career which has taken a hit in England.
And Fiorentina look set to give him that chance.
