According to reports in the Italian media, Aston Villa goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini is wanted by Serie A newcomers SPAL.

Italian media outlet La Nuovo Ferrera via Tutto Atalanta is reporting that Pierluigi Gollini has been identified as a top target for SPAL as they search for a goalkeeper to bolster their options ahead of next season's campaign in the top tier of Italian football.

Pierluigi Gollini arrived at Aston Villa from Hellas Verona last summer and was immediately installed as the number one choice between the sticks for the Villains under Roberto di Matteo.

The Italian youth international played twenty games for Aston Villa and continued to be first choice under Steve Bruce for a while.

However, he was dropped after a number of inconsistent performances with Bruce claiming that he wasn't quite ready for this level.

In January, following the loan arrival of Manchester United's Sam Johnstone, Pierluigi Gollini was sent out on loan to Serie A side Atalanta.

Joining on an eighteen month loan deal, which is set to expire in the summer of 2018, the 22-year-old played just four times and was mainly deputy to Etrit Berisha.

Due to his lack of game time with Atalanta, SPAL are now lining up a swoop for Pierluigi Gollini with Aston Villa likely to sanction either another loan deal or a permanent move for their young stopper.
