Leeds United are not expected to make any signings before Sunday’s opening fixture of the Sky Bet Championship season, reports West Yorkshire Sport.

The Whites travel to the Macron Stadium to face Bolton Wanderers this weekend, where Thomas Christiansen will have a host of new players at his disposal following a busy summer.

Christiansen is still looking to bolster his squad between now and the end of summer, but managing director, Angus Kinnear, has confirmed that any new arrivals before the Bolton game were unlikely.

Kinnear, who was speaking at a season preview podcast for the BBC, confirmed that Leeds were looking to strengthen their defensive options.

Leeds currently have three options in central defence, but are without a recognised left-back heading into the new season, following Charlie Taylor’s decision to quit Elland Road and move to Burnley earlier this summer.

A host of names have been linked with a move to West Yorkshire this summer, but Leeds have remained tight-lipped on who their targets are, going about their transfer business quietly.

Pontus Jansson’s suspension from the end of last season will carry over into the first two games of this campaign, meaning that Liam Cooper is likely to partner Matthew Pennington in central defence for Leeds against Bolton.

Leeds’ failure to sign a recognised left-back is also likely to mean that Gaetano Berardi deputises, as he did for large parts of the 2016/17 season.

The Verdict

Whilst Leeds’ supporters will be disappointed that there will be no new arrivals ahead of the weekend, they will be confident that the defence looking likely to start, will have enough to overcome Bolton.

The addition of another central defender is vital this summer, with Leeds in desperate need of a fourth player to compete with Jansson, Cooper and Pennington.

A left-back will also be targeted, although Berardi’s performance last season will encourage Leeds that there is no rush.
