Sheffield Wednesday should consider selling Fernando Forestieri to bring in much-needed transfer funds for Steve Bruce to spend this summer.

The Owls' attacking midfielder has been linked with a move to promoted rivals Sheffield United and could fetch a sizeable transfer fee if he did make the move.

It's been two seasons of frustration for Forestieri and the 29-year-old has struggled to replicate his first two impressive seasons since moving to South Yorkshire from Watford. However, towards the end of this season he started to show the class many Wednesday fans knew he possessed with a stunning strike at Norwich City to earn himself the goal of the season award.

If there's one club Owls fans won't want Forestieri to leave for it's the Blades, but selling the midfielder could allow Steve Bruce to re-build a squad capable of challenging for promotion next season. Both Norwich and United showed that you don't have to spend big for success: both clubs spent around £5 million on transfers last season, despite selling James Maddison and David Brooks for hefty fees.

Wednesday were under a transfer embargo last summer and Bruce may have to sell before he buys. Equally, while Forestieri is undoubtedly a talented player, he has also been in the headlines for the wrong reasons, including a failure to attend court which led to a warrant for his arrest last December. There have also been rumours of arguments with teammates and in 2016 the midfielder refused to play after being denied a transfer move.

If the Owls could get the rumoured £14 million for the midfielder it would be more than enough to find a replacement as well as other additions. Bruce led Wednesday to a 12th place finish after taking charge of the club in February but they were in contention to make the play-off places until the last two games of the season. While it may hurt to see Forestieri in the red and white stripes of Sheffield United, it could prove to be a vital bit of business. Whether it's to the Blades or another team, Wednesday should seriously consider if the talent of Forestieri outweighs the trouble that comes with it.
