Sell or keep? Oliver Burke at Sheffield United as Middlesbrough line up January move

With the transfer window set to open in January, it will be intriguing to see whether Sheffield United decide to engage in any business.

Whereas manager Slavisa Jokanovic may be tempted to bolster his squad, he could also be willing to wave goodbye to some of his fringe players.

One of the individuals who has recently been linked with a move away from Bramall Lane is Oliver Burke.

According to TEAMtalk, Middlesbrough are reportedly interested in signing the Scotland international from the Blades as new manager Chris Wilder looks to stamp his own authority on the club’s squad.

Here, we have decided to take a look at the pros and cons of United sanctioning a departure for Burke in 2022.

Currently behind the likes of Billy Sharp, Oliver McBurnie, Rhian Brewster and Lys Mousset in the pecking order at Bramall Lane, Burke may find it difficult to force his way into Jokanovic’s plans in the coming months.

Since joining United, the 24-year-old has been extremely underwhelming in-front of goal as he has only managed to find the back of the net on two occasions in 35 appearances.

With Burke’s contract set to run until 2023, the Blades could secure a respectable fee for him in January if Middlesbrough are looking into the possibility of signing the forward on a permanent basis.

Jokanovic could use the cash to reinvest in his squad as United look to push on in the Championship during the second-half of the 2021/22 campaign.

St Mary's?

Whilst Burke has yet to deliver the goods on a consistent basis for the Blades, his lack of game-time this season is partially due to his ongoing struggles with injury.

Forced to watch on from the sidelines in recent months as a result of an issue with his foot, the forward will be determined to prove his worth when he is fit enough to feature at senior level for his side.

By giving Burke the chance to showcase his talent in the Championship, Jokanovic may be able to get the best out of the forward who previously illustrated some real signs of promise at this level during his time with Nottingham Forest.

Before sealing a move to RB Leipzig in 2016, Burke scored six goals and provided one assist in the second-tier for the Reds.

If the forward does indeed step up to the mark for the Blades, Jokanovic ought to consider keeping him at the club next year.
