Scunthorpe United swoop for 28-year-old

Former Huddersfield Town and Southend United winger Harry Bunn has made the step back up to the Football League after his venture with York City came to an end, opting to join Scunthorpe United.

Bunn, who operates on the left-wing, shocked supporters when he made the decision to drop down the Vanarama National League North after a short spell with Scottish side Kilmarnock, but the club decided not to offer him a new contract due to his wage demands and run of injuries last season.

The 28-year-old has represented a number of Football League clubs throughout his career, including Oldham Athletic, Sheffield United, Huddersfield, Bury and Southend, establishing himself as a recognisable name throughout the divisions.

Scunthorpe manager Neil Cox took the winger on trial at the Sands Venue Stadium, where he impressed in pre-season victories over Burton Albion and Barton Town.

Cox commented on his newest addition, telling the Scunthorpe website: “Harry has been really brave with the ball. You can tell he’s played at a higher level and has confidence in his ability. He works really hard for the team as well, which is what we want, and he’s also a great character.

“That’s what we’re looking for, not only good players but characters. I think people have taken to him already – the players definitely have. He gives good advice to the younger players and can play in a number of positions.

“He’s been in since day one of pre-season, has been at the front of the running and excellent in all regards.”

The verdict

A very smart piece of business from Scunthorpe, bringing in much needed experience who has proven himself in the EFL at a number of different clubs. The Iron have began to build a good looking squad, and with Ryan Loft and the new signing Tyrone O’Neill up front, Bunn can be an ideal creative player to help out with the assists.
