Scunthorpe forward should be worried about his place with new arrival

Published

Scunthorpe United currently sit 23rd in League Two and this isn’t the start the fans or the club would have envisaged when they got relegated from League One last season.

Scunthorpe have so far picked up 5 points from 10 games so far with their sole victory coming in a 3-0 thumping of Morecambe at home. The club would have been hoping for a much better start with them hoping to bounce back immediately into League One but they look a long way away from that prospect currently.

One player who should be worried about his place is forward Alex Gilliead, Gilliead has started 9 league games this season but has yet to register a goal or assist as of yet and with the new arrival of Jamie Ward, this may leave Gilliead sweating over his place in the team.

Since signing for Scunthorpe at the beginning of last season Gilliead has only scored one goal for the side and he will need to look to up this if he is to keep his place in the side and fight for the shirt.

As well as not contributing towards a goal for the team yet this term, Gilliead only possesses a 67% pass completion rate in the opposition half. This is a poor ratio for a type of player who should be looking to make things happen for his side. In addition to the poor pass completion, Gilliead has only completed 66% of dribbles, on average 2.1 per game, for a forward player he should be looking at being in the 70% mark.

Jamie Ward arrives on a free after being let go by Nottingham Forest in the summer and his explosiveness along with his tenacity could be exactly what Scunthorpe are after to try and get them into a mid-table position at very least and not fighting to stay up. Ward is direct and loves to drive at players as well as getting crosses into the box so Scunthorpe frontman Kevin Van Veen will be looking to be on the move in the box once Ward picks up the ball.

Overall, the signing of Jamie Ward is definitely a positive one for the Iron but Gilliead may well be on his way out the side to make way for Ward.
