Scottish Premiership outfit Hearts are still trying to bring versatile Sheffield Wednesday man Callum Paterson back to the club before Tuesday's transfer deadline.

That is according to the Edinburgh Evening News, who say that the 28-year-old is Robbie Neilson's top target after weeks of back and forth as to whether the Jam Tarts were going to make their move.

Bids were turned down earlier in the window by Wednesday for Paterson, with manager Darren Moore revealing that his number 13 would be open to extending his stay at Hillsborough.

With a contract that expires at the end of the season though, Paterson's time at the Owls is currently running out, and Hearts can try and sign him on a pre-contract agreement if they wish for the start of next season.

It appears though that the Edinburgh outfit would prefer to bring him in instantly though and by the end of the current transfer window and they will press ahead in their attempts in the next 48 hours.

Paterson has featured 28 times in all competitions for Wednesday this season, scoring four times, with just 16 of his appearances coming from the start.

The Verdict

Despite not starting as often as he would like in League One this season, Paterson clearly still has a role to play at Hillsborough.

The Scotland international is behind Josh Windass and Michael Smith in the pecking order, but he has started in cup games regularly and is often Moore's first-choice attacker off the bench.

You could understand the attraction of a return to Tynecastle though for Paterson as he spent five years as a professional there in the early stages of his career before moving into the EFL.

A return north of the border would give him the chance to become a main man once again, so this one could either go down to the wire on deadline day or rumble on further in regards to a pre-contract after the window shuts.
