Fleetwood Town travel to face Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough this weekend, as the Owls look to continue their promotion push.

The Owls are currently on an unbeaten run of 14 games in League One, a run that has seen them stay in the play offs for the majority of the season and now break into the top two ahead of Ipswich Town.

However, Wednesday will be against a Fleetwood side that has not done too badly on the road this season, losing just three of their 13 games, all of which have been by one goal.

The pair only met on Boxing Day in the reverse fixture, and Fleetwood held up a strong rear guard and made Wednesday work for all three points.

Ahead of this game, Fleetwood boss Scott Brown has been speaking in glowing terms about Darren Moore and the Sheffield Wednesday team itself.

He said, via The Star: “It’s a test of character for the lads, going away to a club with great history and fantastic support. They’ve got a good manager there with Darren, as well.

"For us it’s about going to enjoy it, but to also work on what we’ve been doing all week - be structurally secure behind the ball, and not get done by the crowd early doors like we did at Ipswich.

“We know we can go away from home and cause an upset; we’ve done that in the past, but Sheffield Wednesday are a very, very good team. We need to make sure we’re on our A-game, because they’ve got some great players and some good goalscorers as well.”

Brown also went on to suggest that Mark McGuinness being recalled by his parent club Cardiff City ahead of this game could be a help.

Brown added: “They’ve lost McGuinness which is obviously a huge miss for them as he’s gone back to Cardiff - he was the difference between the two teams last time I thought. His aggression, height, and size… For us that’ll help.”

The Verdict

For teams like Fleetwood, when they go to historic grounds like Hillsborough and face teams like Sheffield Wednesday, there is no pressure on them to succeed, which makes them a dangerous side.

However, it is also always nice for a manager to hear compliments from a fellow league manager, and what Brown said is hard to disagree with, as Darren Moore has done a fantastic job on Wednesday, and at this level, he has once again proved his worth.

While the departure of McGuinness will be a big blow for Wednesday and a timely boost for Fleetwood, they will know the Cardiff man was very influential in Wednesday’s back line.
