Bristol City midfielder Sammie Szmodics has shared an update as the second-tier head into the second intetnational break of the season.

The 24-year-old made the move to the South West from Colchester United during the summer transfer window but on Tuesday night he made a return to the Essex club.

Posting on Instagram, his former teammate Frank Nouble shared a video of Szmodics watching the club's EFL Trophy clash with Tottenham Hotspurs' Under-21 side, along with the caption: "@SamSzmodics_ can't stay away the boy".

He was a crucial part in the side's push for a place in the League Two play-offs last season, netting 14 goals and assisting a further nine, earning the interest of the Championship promotion hopefuls in the process.

Since moving to Ashton Gate, however, it has been a bit of a slow burner, making just one league appearance so far and picking up a knock during that clash with Swansea City.

Lee Jonhsnon's men head into the international break sat in sixth place, just two behind league-leaders West Brom, with a trip to Luton Town up next for the club after the break.

The verdict

It is always nice to see former players supporting their former clubs like this and Szmodics still has a lot of time for Colchester.

He was excellent for them last season but there is no doubt that without their guidance he would not be where he is today.

The next step will be to become a first-team regular with the Robins. It will be no mean feet given the quality possessed in their squad, but if he can do it, it will be a huge moment for him.
