Barnsley are riding the crest of a wave right now and surprisingly sit inside the Championship play-off places with just a month of the season left to go.

It seems ridiculous to think that the Tykes are where they are right now considering they only stayed up last season by the skin of their teeth - a last day victory over Brentford securing their spot in the second tier but they owed much of that fortune down to Wigan's collapse into administration.

After Gerhard Struber departed a month into this season, Valerien Ismael took over the ship in South Yorkshire and he's took the club to heights in the table that seemed unthinkable, and promotion to the Premier League for the first time since 1997 seems like a realistic thought.

And considering the club have been flip-flopping between the Championship and League One in the last decade it makes their current position even greater - but what of the last decade and who played for Barnsley?

We've tried to make a best starting line-up from the last 10 years at Oakwell - do you agree? Let us know!

There's not a wide selection of goalkeepers to choose from over the last decade for Barnsley, but we've gone for Steele over Adam Davies.

All of Steele's seasons for the Tykes were in the Championship and he was a regular starter for five whole seasons, keeping the club above the relegation zone on multiple occasions.

Barnsley did eventually get relegated to League One in Steele's final season with the club but he moved onto bigger and better things with Greek giants Panathinaikos - he's not been a regular player for anyone since 2016 but he made a big impact at Oakwell in his six years there.

Barnsley veteran Bobby Hassell was considered for this but an England international by the name of Kieran Trippier had a loan spell in the 2010-11 season that was crucial for his future development.

Trippier was sitting in Man City's reserves before going to Oakwell for game-time, and he had a fantastic season for the Tykes, playing 39 league games and scoring twice, subsequently winning the club's Young Player of the Year award.

His sole Barnsley season was a catalyst for bigger things - Trippier then joined Burnley before moving on to Tottenham Hotspur and then Atletico Madrid - he may not have scored that famous free-kick against Croatia in 2018 if it wasn't for his season-long stint at Barnsley.

Barnsley have been lucky enough to have a number of really good centre-backs play for them over the last decade, but one of the best surely has to be Mawson.

Mawson may have only played a season of League One football for Barnsley and four Championship games but he was so, so classy for them.

A summer 2015 signing from Brentford having not made the grade at Griffin Park, Mawson scored six times in his only full season for the Tykes and after netting twice in his first four games in the second tier, he was sold to Swansea City in the Premier League for around £5 million.

A great player who was always destined for bigger things, maybe the club could tempt him back if promotion is achieved this season...

Barnsley's talent of finding cheap, talented defenders continued a year after Mawson's departure with the signing of Pinnock after a stunning season in non-league with Forest Green Rovers.

Pinnock took a while to break into Barnsley's first-team, however it was the 2018-19 season where he excelled for the club in League One, playing every single game in their promotion-winning campaign.

His talents as a ball-playing defender were clear for all to see and that is why in the summer of 2019, Brentford purchased him for around £3 million - he and Mawson beat the likes of Marc Roberts and John Stones to spots in this line-up - the latter would have definitely made it if he spent a bit longer in Barnsley's senior side before his move to Everton.

Barnsley haven't exactly been blessed with quality left-backs over the last decade - Dani Pinillos was a consideration but we've gone with current Tyke Styles, who is playing at left-wing-back in Ismael's system despite being a natural midfielder.

It's perhaps cheating putting him in a flat back four in this line-up as he hasn't played there really, but Styles is so talented and he's made that left side his own this season.

The 20-year-old has scored four goals from that position - pretty much all of them being worldies - and his performances this season has led to Premier League interest from Southampton (via The Mirror).

Barnsley fans would like Styles to stay for another season so they can see his magic from left-wing-back in person, but it'll be hard to keep him beyond the summer.

A player who racked up 164 league appearances for the Tykes over two permanent spells, Hammill was pretty much the only choice for the right wing position.

His first spell ended in January 2011 - performances in the first half of the 2010/11 campaign saw him score eight times in the Championship and it ended with Premier League side Wolves taking a punt on him.

Hammill returned to Oakwell four-and-a-half years later and in his first season back he helped the club back into the Championship - scoring an incredible goal in the play-off final against Millwall in 2016.

The winger was a regular for the next two seasons in the Championship but after a goalless season, Hammill departed in 2018 - he still did enough though to make it into this team.

Like the centre-back position, Barnsley have had some talented players in the engine room, and perhaps none more-so than Hourihane.

The Irishman made an electric start to his Tykes career in 2014 and netted 13 league goals from midfield in his first season, and hit double figures once again in the following campaign as Barnsley secured promotion to the Championship.

Hourihane's talent continued to accelerate as he spent the next half-season with the Tykes in the second tier, but he was taken from the club by Aston Villa mid-season for around £3 million, but he left Barnsley as a fan favourite having scored 29 times in 112 league outings.

Another current Tyke to make this line-up, Mowatt wasn't always a regular starter following his move from Leeds in 2017.

Mowatt had played pretty regularly for Leeds which is why it was a surprise to see him sent out on loan to League One side Oxford United just six months after Barnsley paid £600,000 for him, but that spell down south did wonders.

The midfielder returned to the Tykes set-up in 2018 and has been a regular ever since, scoring eight goals in his return season and is on seven for the current campaign with a further seven assists notched.

Mowatt's future is very much up in the air with his contract expiring at the end of the season - Barnsley fans will be praying he stays as he's a massive influence and definitely one of the best from the last decade.

Harvey Barnes' five months at Oakwell in the 2017/18 season put him on the path to stardom with Leicester City, however a player who had a similar brief spell at Oakwell years prior has trumped him.

Vaz Te's career wasn't really going anywhere in 2011 - he'd made appearances for Bolton in the Premier League in the mid-2000's but after a spell at Hibernian the season prior, Keith Hill picked him up on a free transfer for the 2011/12 campaign.

The Portuguese forward exceeded all expectations, scoring 10 goals in 22 games for the Tykes in just half a season, but his contract only being for a year put the club in a weak position and when Vaz Te's former boss Sam Allardyce came calling from West Ham, he was on the move after just six months.

His time in Yorkshire may have been brief, but Vaz Te's impact cannot be understated.

Some talented strikers are missing out here - both Oli McBurnie for his brief loan spell at Oakwell and Kieffer Moore before he moved on to Wigan Athletic, but both of the selections here have scored goals, goals, goals for Barnsley and the first one is Winnall.

After a prolific 2013/14 season in League Two with Scunthorpe, Winnall stepped up with Barnsley to League One and he didn't quite get off to a hot start with just nine goals in his first season, but in the 2015/16 promotion campaign his 21 goals definitely helped.

Winnall had a similarly prolific run in the Championship the following season, scoring 11 times in 21 games before an approach from Sheffield Wednesday was too good to turn down - Winnall hasn't hit the same prolific heights since but he was some player for the Tykes.

The other striker beating McBurnie and Moore to be Winnall's partner is a player who has hit double figures in the league in all three full seasons he's played for the Tykes.

After an initial loan spell in the 2018/19 season, Woodrow moved from Fulham permanently in the summer of 2019 and he's been so effective for Barnsley.

Woodrow has scored 37 times in the near three full-time seasons he's been at Oakwell and he's also proven his versatility, playing as both his natural striking position and as an attacking midfielder at times.

At the age of 26, there's still more to come from Woodrow and he could be a top flight player next season with the Tykes.
