Sam Morsy has expressed his delight at the news of Wigan Athletic's takeover.

The Latics announced on Tuesday afternoon that the club had finalised a deal with Phoenix 2021 Limited that will see the consortium become the new owners of the League One club.

Wigan have endured a torrid time of late with financial issues forcing the decline of the club with the side suffering relegation from the Championship last term as a result of a points deduction.

This term hasn't been much better with Wigan currently battling to avoid relegation to League Two after another disappointing season.

However with the future of the club now secured it means that they can now start to look forward.

One man who has been watching the situation closely is Sam Morsy.

The midfielder was a popular figure at the DW Stadium but was forced to leave after the club went into administration with Middlesbrough swooping in to sign the player.

But with the news being announced Morsy couldn't hide his delight on social media.

Taking to social media, Morsy said: "A day we've been waiting a long time for!

"So happy for the fans and everyone connected to the club. A new era begins..."

The verdict

What an exciting time it is for Wigan Athletic.

After a nightmare period in the club's history it's great to see the Latics have their future secured at long last.

Sam Morsy was a popular figure among supporters and I'm sure that his reputation among the fans will only improve given his clear, ongoing support of the team during this difficult period.
