It's probably fair to say that the first few months of life as a Football League club haven't quite gone the way that many associated with Salford City would have expected.

Having won promotion to the Football League via the National League play-offs at the end of last season, before bringing in no fewer than 13 new players during the summer transfer, expectations will have been high around the club, particularly given a number of people had them down as being among the favourites to make it back to back promotions this season.

As it is, things haven't exactly gone as planned for the League Two newcomers.

So far this season, Graham Alexander's heavily backed side have taken just two wins and five draws from their 11 league games so far this season, leaving them 18th in the early fourth-tier standings.

While that is admittedly not catastrophic given they are making their debut at this level, there may be some of a Salford persuasion who feel that is something of a disappointment in comparison to the high hopes that many had for the club at the start of the campaign.

Now however, it seems as though it is possible that there could yet be more reason for the Salford faithful to start believing of an even better debut campaign in the Football League, if recent claims are to be believed.

According to the latest reports from The Bolton News, Salford are interested in a move to sign winger Ben Marshall, who is a free agent following his departure from newly-promoted Premier League side Norwich City at the end of last season.

Bringing Marshall in therefore, would surely be a big lift for everyone around Salford.

Not only would the recruitment of a player who has spent much of his career at League One and Championship level be a huge boost in terms of quality for a side new to League Two such as Salford, but it would also be a significant statement of intent, not least because of who it seems they could be going up against for his signature.

Speaking earlier this week, Keith Hill, who is now manager of League One Bolton Wanderers, admitted that they too are interested in bringing Marshall to the club on trial, with the view to a potential permanent move.

This therefore, could be seen as a big opportunity for Salford.

If they are able to beat a club the size of Bolton to the signing of a player with the sort of pedigree that Marshall has, it would surely show their fans, and the rest of the league, that they are serious about wanting to push up the divisions in the coming seasons.

Indeed, with the backing that Salford are currently receiving - thanks in part to the Class of 92 no less - in comparison to the financial tightrope that Bolton are walking following their recent troubles, there may even be a sense around Salford that they are in the stronger position of there two sides when it comes to negotiating this deal.

It is worth remembering that just a few years ago when Bolton were still competing at the very top of English football in the Premier League, Salford were a side still battling it out in the lower reaches of non-long football.

Winning a transfer battle with a club such as Bolton, for a player such as Marshall therefore, would surely only serve to once again remind those Salford fans just how far their club has come, in such a short space of time.
