Birmingham City boss Aitor Karanka has claimed that he is really proud of the effort his players showed in their 1-0 defeat to Norwich City but that 60 seconds changed the game, which has drawn a frustrated response from many Blues fans.
Karanka’s side were handed their second loss in four days last night at Carrow Road, with Mario Vrancic scoring the winner after 87 minutes.
The Blues had looked resolute defensively up to that point but saw Adam Clayton sent off just a minute before Norwich’s goal, having been shown two yellow cards.
Speaking to club media after the game, Karanka suggested that minute had proved pivotal but indicated he was still happy with his side’s display.
He said: “Yes, everything changed in those 60 seconds but we have lost two games in four days but the performance has been completely different.
“I know that we haven’t played really well when he had the ball but we have to know that we were playing against a team that was in the Premier League last season which has been working with a manager for two or three years so the players know the shape, the system, and the style.
“We had to change the shape because we missed important players today but again I think with this commitment when everybody is involved and will be 100% fit we will play really well.”
Karanka added: “The sending off of Clayton has been really easy for the referee. Two tackles and two yellow cards, last Saturday one penalty. I think it’s so easy for the referees to referee our games.
“Really proud of the players today because their effort has been amazing.”
Are these 10 facts about St Andrew’s true or false?
The result leaves the Blues down in 17th with just one win from the opening six matches in the Championship.
They travel to the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium to take on QPR on Saturday before welcoming in-form Huddersfield Town to St Andrew’s the following Wednesday.
Karanka’s post-match comments don’t appear to have left many Blues fans impressed ahead of that run, with plenty taking to Twitter to voice their frustration.

Six games played and we have ZERO goals from open play? You think this is acceptable? I don’t want to watch a defence v attack game for 90 minutes!

Stupid excuses yes they were in the prem but we didn’t give them a game it’s that simple. So Watford, Bournemouth we should just let them freely attach because they was in the prem lol

An honest assessment would have been that we came to park the bus, defended fairly well (which isn’t that difficult when you’ve got 10 men on the edge of your own box for 96 mins) but offered nothing going forward and have a striker that’s worse than useless and bone bloody idle.

Utter tosh, play four at the back and use wingers, take the game to the opposition, hogan isn’t a juke, he isn’t going to hold the ball up with no support around him.

Do me a favour. Yes it’s a new team and they show commitment but we don’t have an attack so we are going to simply have to defend game after game.
