Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk has announced that his squad are set to return to training next week, which has drawn an interesting reaction from fans of the Yorkshire club.

It has been more than two months since the EFL season was suspended but it was reported last week that the Championship is moving towards returning in June.

EFL chairman Rick Parry informed clubs earlier this month that they were not allowed to return to training until the 25th of May, which is this coming Monday.

Monk announced yesterday that Wednesday would be returning to training then, with the club ensuring they follow the strict guidelines set by the government and the EFL.

That will include testing all players and staff ahead of the proposed return on Monday.

In a statement on the club website, the Wednesday boss said: "Phase one has been allowed and we are waiting for phase two to be signed off.

"I’ve seen the Premier League has been told their players can go to phase two, we’re still waiting for that official confirmation but it looks like we will get that this week.

“We will have to wait for phase three, which is normal training, and obviously if we can’t get to that point then we can’t complete the season.

"But we had a Championship managers’ meeting and the desire is to get the season completed if we possibly can.”

He added that no player or staff member had expressed a desire not to return.

It has been an up and down season for the Owls, who were battling for a top-six place in December but have slipped down the table after winning just two of their last 14 league games.
