Nottingham Forest academy product Ryan Yates has expressed his delight at making his debut for the club.

The 20-year-old signed a new five-year deal in July and has now made his first appearance for the club in a competitive fixture.

Yates started in the Carabao Cup first round tie at home to League Two Bury on Tuesday night and played the first half before he was replaced by Ben Osborn.

The midfielder spent the first half of last season out on loan to League Two Notts County before a temporary switch up one division to League One Scunthorpe United in January.

He made a total of 47 approaches last season and scored eight goals over his two spells away from the City Ground.

And after Forest’s 10-9 penalty win against Bury after the game finished 1-1, Yates took to Twitter and said: “So proud to have made my @NFFC debut last night, a day I will never forget.”

The Verdict

It is a positive move for the Forest boss Aitor Karanka to give the young midfielder his debut at the City Ground.

It is a shame that it only lasted 45 minutes, but that will surely make Yates hungrier to succeed going forward.

He has a tough time breaking into the current Forest first team but he is on the manager’s radar, and if he continues to impress then there should be no reason as to why he could not feature more this season.

Yates was loaned out to League Two and League One last year so the next natural step is the Championship and there is no better place to do it than with the club that has shown faith in you since your arrival.
