Swansea City head coach Russell Martin has admitted that he is really happy to be at the club and opted to turn down the chance to speak to another side about a potential move earlier this month.

Martin was drafted in as Steve Cooper's successor last year following a stint at Milton Keynes Dons.

During his debut season in charge of the Jacks, the 36-year-old led his side to 16 victories in the Championship as they secured a 15th place finish at this level.

Swansea will be keen to move forward as a club next season with Martin at the helm.

With the transfer window set to open next month, it wouldn't be at all surprising if the Jacks opt to bolster their squad by securing the services of some fresh faces.

Swansea will also be keen to keep Joel Piroe and Flynn Downes at the club.

Piroe was recently linked with a move to Leicester City while Downes is believed to be attracting interest from Leeds United.

Speaking at a Swansea fans forum (as cited by BBC Sport) last night about his current situation, Martin said: "We are just really grateful to be here.

"Our families love being here and we love being here.

"We have been supported incredibly well since we have been here, which we will always be grateful for.

"My agent rang me two weeks ago and said there's a club that would like to speak to you.

"I said I had absolutely no interest because we are really happy here.

"I think we are early on in a project we feel really passionate about.

"We left our old club early to come here, but it is probably one of the only clubs we would have done that for because of the Swansea way, the environment and the playing style.

"We are really excited to get to work in pre-season and carry on."

The Verdict

Whereas Martin hasn't named the team who contacted his agent regarding a move, he was believed to be on Watford's radar.

After Martin turned down the chance to talk to the Hornets, Rob Edwards was appointed as the club's new head coach.

Having expressed his willingness to help Swansea reach new heights in the Championship in the not-too-distant future, it will be intriguing to see whether Martin will be able to nail his transfer recruitment this summer.

By signing some classy operators, the Jacks may be able to go on to achieve a relative amount of success during the opening stages of the 2022/23 campaign.
