Russell Martin is relaxed about Swansea City’s remaining transfer business for this summer.

The South Wales club may have their market activity go down to the wire as Martin looks to improve his first team squad.

However, he is calm over the situation and trusts that his current set of players is capable of being competitive this Championship season.

Swansea are set to face a trip to newly promoted Rotherham United on the opening day of the new campaign on Saturday.

It is at the role of right-wing back where Swansea are currently left short and where the club is most looking to reinforce their options.

Cyrus Christie departed at the end of last season following the conclusion of his loan deal from Fulham.

Despite being a free agent, there is no clear sign that the Irish international will make his return to the Swansea.com stadium this season.

"There's been discussions ongoing for a long while with some of the players and I think some of them just really want to go and play football now," said Martin, via Wales Online.

"The window is still going for another four weeks and these things have a tendency to drag on until quite late.

"I think the next three weeks will tell us a lot about what we need. Whatever team we put out on Saturday I'll be really happy with.

“We always want specialists in certain positions. But no one here is stressing about it.

"Ideally before the end of the month, we'd like another specialist in that position. That wide right, wingback position. Whatever you want to call it.

"If it doesn't happen it's not disastrous. Then after the next three weeks, it will probably tell us what else we need. But we're really pleased with what we've got."

Swansea will be aiming to improve on their 15th place last season in what was ultimately a transitional campaign for the team.

This will be Martin’s second season in charge of the first team, having replaced Steve Cooper last summer following the team’s play-off final defeat to Brentford.

The Verdict

Given Christie is currently a free agent, and that he performed so well for the team last season, it is a surprise that the club is not looking to re-sign the 29-year-old.

But there are still four or so weeks left in the transfer window so there is still plenty of time to bring in new additions.

It has been a strange summer given how early the season is returning compared to the usual schedule.

Teams have had to adapt, and now have far more fixtures played while activity is allowed which gives the early part of this season a new dynamic.
