If you’re looking for a contender for the most surprising signing of 2020, we have an early contender for you.
According to reports from Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are plotting a move to sign former Middlesbrough forward Martin Braithwaite.
The Denmark international left the Riverside Stadium last summer in favour of a permanent switch to Spanish side Leganes who he’s played for this term.
Braithwaite has been a star player for the La Liga strugglers, however they are reportedly close to a transfer blow as Barcelona prepare to bring him in on an emergency deal.
A long-term injury to Ousmane Dembele means that Barcelona are allowed to bring in a free agent or someone from the Spanish top flight within the next two months.
Is Martin Braithwaite good enough to play for Barcelona?
Braithwaite has a reported £17million release clause, meaning that the Spanish giants would have to pay out of they’re to secure a deal for the 28-year-old.
As you’d imagine, the potential deal has certainly got Middlesbrough fans talking with many in disbelief that the former star could be plying his trade at the Nou Camp.
Here’s what some of them had to say.
now Braithwaite knows someone else is after him he won’t play anymore for Leganes even if the move doesn’t happen. Did the same at Boro, just down tools and sulked until he was kicked out. https://t.co/uMV2kph9Cy

Do we have a sell on clause for Braithwaite? #Boro

Would it come as a shock to absolutely no one if there is no sell on clause on Braithwaite?
Bought for £9 million, plays in the French top division, plays well at a world Cup and plays in the Spanish top division….. Sold for less than we bought him for. Well done lads 👍

Not the main point, but having watched Martin Braithwaite a few times at Boro I'm astonished he's now going to be lining up for Barcelona 😲⚽️

Braithwaite has gone from Pulis' bench at Boro in the Champ, to playing alongside THE greatest ever at Barca within a couple years (if this move goes through). There's a hell of a lot of luck involved in footballer's careers. Just another example of how quickly things can change.
