The Liverpool Echo is tonight reporting that Royle has been appointed to Roberto Martinez’s backroom staff at Everton, where he will take up a role assisting the development of young players at the club.

Royle is seen as a legend at Goodison Park, scoring 119 goals in 275 appearances for the Toffees during his time at the club between 1966 and 1974. He also managed Everton between 1994 and 1997, leading them to their last major honour in 1995.

Speaking to the Echo, Royle said: “I was happy with my role at Norwich City and wouldn’t have considered an offer from any other club than Everton.”

“I’d like to thank Norwich for their co-operation and understanding with this situation and I wish Neil Adams and everyone at Carrow Road all the best for the new season. “

“Everyone knows how much Everton means to me.”
