Derby County manager Gary Rowett may well have whetted the appetite of Rams supporters by admitting that ‘key signings’ will be made by the club over the coming months, reports The Derby Telegraph.
The Rams finished ninth in the Championship last season but a hefty 13 points adrift of the play-offs, and former Birmingham and Burton boss Rowett has stamped his authority on the squad in a bid to bridge that gap next time round.
The East Midlands club have seen prized assets Tom Ince and Will Hughes leave the club this summer, as has right-back Cyrus Christie, yet they have also brought in serious talent in the form of Curtis Davies and Andre Wisdom.
And 43-year-old Rowett has admitted that their summer window is not going to end there, hinting that more signings will follow, and that some of his targets are playing in the Premier League.
He said: ‘I still think we have quite a bit more business to do in the market; that will be some outs as well as some ins.
‘Certainly, we will make some key signings still. What we have to do with that is remain patient.
‘We have some excellent targets and a lot of the Premier League clubs are away on tour, so we might have to wait for one or two of those teams to get back before we can move.’
These comments are sure to delight the iPro faithful, who have seen their side record five successive top-ten finishes in the Championship, yet get no nearer to return to the Premier League for the first time since 2008.
Last season was a frustrating one for the Rams supporters, but with Rowett embarking on a full pre-season and summer window, expectations will again by high around the club that they can sustain a promotion push and thus return to the promised land next season.
