Brentford secured one of the shrewdest signings of the summer, as they sealed a deal for Exeter City hotshot Ollie Watkins.

The 21-year-old has made the transition from League Two to the Championship with ease, and he's undoubtedly got a very bright future ahead.

However, the Bees were not the only team interested in the attacker in the summer, and Derby County were another team credited with an interest in the player.

Should the Rams have forced through a move to sign the impressive youngster?

The writers here at FLW issue their verdicts.....

Chris Gallagher

Not just Derby, a host of teams.

Watkins has been the standout player at Griffin Park this season and is clearly more than capable of excelling at this level.

His pace, trickery and goals make him a very valuable player to Brentford and he would've added to most sides in the league.

Fair play to the Bees for taking a chance on him from League Two, others will be regretting they didn't.

George Dagless

Rowett should have acted.

Watkins has proved an early revelation this season for Brentford and it wouldn't be a surprise to see more come knocking in the next window.

Whether Derby will get him or not, though, remains to be seen with them still needing to climb the table and underline their ambition.

Until that happens, I don't think he'd want to move to Pride Park.

Alfie Burns

Undoubtedly.

Watkins’ early season form for Brentford will leave half the Championship wishing they made a move for him, not just Derby.

The youngster is scoring and creating goals for the Bees, and if he continues to impress for Dean Smith’s side, it could only be a flying visit to the Championship.

Watkins is destined for the top.
