Gary Rowett has spent the first month of his reign at The Den assessing the players within his squad, as well as taking a look at the type of youngsters that are in the academy for Millwall.

The new Lions manager has now given his take - via News at Den - on under-23 striker George Alexander, who has netted nine goals already for the under-23 side at The Den as he continues his development.

The 19-year-old forward made his debut for Millwall last season in the final day defeat to Wigan Athletic, and is yet to make an appearance for the senior squad this season however he has been stepping up to train with the first team on some occasions.

On the youngster, Rowett said: "He is a goalscorer, he has had that impact on U23 games when we have watched the games.

"I think perhaps it's easy to say with a young player, but physically, he isn't quite as developed as some of the players, but mentally, he gets the game."

45-year-old manager Rowett was appointed manager of Millwall last month following the resignation of Neil Harris, and the new Lions gaffer has overseen his new side just lose once in four games as he aims to take them up the table.

Millwall are currently sat 15th in the Championship table, having picked up 21 points from 16 games, which leaves them just a point from breaking into the top half.

The Verdict

Rowett is right to be cautious about throwing Alexander into first-team action as the squad has got off to a solid start during his reign.

The Millwall manager will more than likely have to weigh up the option of loaning the young striker out in January to test him in regular football at a senior environment before giving him a shot of being in the first-team for Championship action.
