Millwall manager Gary Rowett has said that his side 'couldn't break Wigan down' last night, as the pair share the points in 2-2 draw at The Den.

The home side fell behind after three minutes when Anthony Pilkington scored for Wigan, before Shaun Hutchinson equalised midway through the second-half with his third goal of the season.

Paul Cook's side took the lead again in the second-half with Antonee Robinson but Matt Smith, as he did against Charlton Athletic earlier in the month, came off the bench to score for Millwall with his fifth of the season.

Speaking to the media after the game, Rowett commended his opponent's performance at The Den:

"We couldn't break Wigan down tonight - to be honest," the Lions boss admitted. "I thought it was going to be a difficult game coming off the back of the high of the weekend," the manager says.

"After the energy, the quality and the journey back after Swansea, I just felt as if tonight would be tough. We have to give credit to Wigan, they're fighting for their lives, and they were far more aggressive than us early on."

Though Millwall had more of the ball last night, Wigan had more shots on goal than the home side and put in a very confident performance away from home.

"They won more second balls, played very directly and did it well and it's something we struggled to deal with," Rowett said of Wigan.

"After three minutes, one diagonal ball gets headed down and we were too slow to react. A fantastic finish, yes, but a goal that could've been avoided.

"After that, we picked things up but played slightly laboured at times. When we got the ball over to the right, we looked dangerous - but it's something we didn't do enough, and my main disappointment was just not showing quite enough intensity."

The point drops Millwall a place into 11th, whilst Wigan hover just over the drop zone in 21st.

The verdict

Wigan under Cook have been notorious for coming to places like The Den and taking the game straight to the home team. Attack is the best form of defence for them and for Millwall, it would've been a game they were expecting to win.

Nevertheless, it means Rowett has now taken ten points from his first five games in charge of Millwall. A fine start to his tenure in London which could've been made better with a win last night, before they travel to one of Rowett's former clubs in Birmingham this weekend.
