Gary Rowett has said that Darren Bent will be largely in control of his own destiny in the January transfer window.
The Derby manager said that Burton boss Nigel Clough has been in contact with him regarding the possibility of engineering a move for the former Tottenham striker this month.
However, Rowett has said that he is not actively looking to offload the striker but is mindful that injury has kept Bent out for the opening months of the season and that the 33-year-old is out of contact at the end of the current campaign.
Bent is yet to make an appearance for the Rams this season and they have been doing well without him as they sit second in the Championship, with a two-point cushion.
Rowett told the Derby Telegraph: “I speak to Nigel quite regularly. He asked about Benty, and I just said ‘we are not sat here desperately wanting to let Benty go, but I appreciate the fact he has not played a lot of football’.
“What he won’t want in the second six months of the season is to have no football at all with being out of contract at the end of the season. For him, it will be a case of what he wants to do.
“With most of these scenarios, if a player wants to go out on loan they will obviously influence to a certain degree where they go. If Darren Bent came and knocked on my door and said ‘I want to go to Burton on loan’, then we would look at the possibility of trying to help them out.”
Player power is often highlighted as a major issue in the modern game so it is rare to see Rowett admit that he will be dictated to a certain extent by what Bent wants to do.
I would keep Bent around if I was Derby but it is clear that Rowett has too much respect for the player’s professional development to let him just sit in the reserves as an option that is never used. That is a testament to his man-management skills.
