Gary Rowett has delivered an update on George Thorne, confirming that the Derby County midfielder is available and in training.

Thorne did not feature for Derby throughout April, with the midfielder’s last appearance for the Rams coming in the humiliating 4-1 defeat to Sunderland back in March.

The 25-year-old was brought off after 58 minutes on that disappointing evening, with Rowett not handing the midfielder another opportunity since then.

Discussing Thorne ahead of this Sunday’s clash with Barnsley, Rowett told @dcfcofficial:

Sunday’s clash with Barnsley is the final game of the regular season, with Derby looking to cement their place in the Sky Bet Championship’s play-offs.

Four points from clashes with Cardiff City and Aston Villa have put Rowett’s side in a commanding position, with Derby sitting sixth and two points clear of Preston North End ahead of this weekend.

A point against Barnsley, who are fighting to stay in the Championship, this weekend should be enough to guarantee Derby sixth spot and a place in the play-offs.

The Verdict

Thorne’s omission has come at a key part of the season, and although the midfielder is training well, it is hard to see him coming back into contention, particularly with Derby in the hunt for promotion.

Results in recent weeks have improved, with Thorne nowhere near Rowett’s starting XI. It is hard to see the Derby boss changing his stance in the coming weeks, especially with so much at stake.
