His refusal to put pen to paper has left plenty of Championship clubs on red alert. Charlton Athletic have joined Fulham in the race to sign Rotherham United midfielder, whilst Leeds United, Ipswich Town and Bolton are also reported to be in the mix.

Pringle scored a penalty for Rotherham in the play-off final shoot-out in 2014, and has been a loyal servant for the Millers, making over 140 appearances for the club.

But after the epic race to survive the Championship drop, Pringle told the club he felt it was time to leave.

The 26-year-old said: “I could have signed another three years, but I think I would have been in position where I looked back and thought ‘what if’.

“I wanted to test myself elsewhere and see if I could go and play at a higher level or play somewhere else and see how I did.”
