Rotherham United are set to beat Sunderland to the loan signing of Bristol City talent Hakeeb Adelakun according to a report from Bristol Live.

Adelakun hasn't made a single appearance for Lee Johnson's first team this season, which has raised doubt as to whether his short-term future is with the Championship club.

The 23-year-old did make five appearances last season, but his game time was cut short prematurely by a season-ending ankle injury, which will have been tough to take for the winger.

Rotherham have evidently wasted no time this month in targeting Adelakun, and have seemingly beaten Sunderland in the race to land his signature on a six-month loan deal.

The Millers are currently sat second in the League One table, and they'll be hoping that the Robins youngster can add something to their side in the second-half of this year's league campaign.

Bristol City will be hoping that Adelakun can find much-needed regular game time in senior football this season, and are certain to be keeping a close eye on his progress with Paul Warne's men in the third tier.

If the deal between both parties is completed in time, Adelakun could be in line to make his debut for Rotherham this weekend, when they take on promotion rivals Oxford United on Saturday.

Can you name every Sunderland player's shirt number this season?

The Verdict:

They've done really well to beat Sunderland to the signing of Adelakun. The Verdict:

I would have thought that the Black Cats would have been a more tempting proposition for the youngster, but it seems more likely that Rotherham are able to offer him regular game time compared to Phil Parkinson's side for the remainder of this year's campaign.

He could be exactly what Rotherham need to fire themselves back into the Championship this season.
