Rotherham United are said to be interested in signing midfielder Ben Marshall according to a recent report from The Star

Marshall is currently a free-agent after being released from Norwich City last season, and the Millers have been in contact with the midfielder over a potential deal to bring him to the New York Stadium.

The 28-year-old spent last season on loan with Millwall in the Championship and made 22 appearances for the Lions first team as they finished 21st in the second tier standings.

Marshall's last eight seasons in football have been in the Championship, but Rotherham boss Paul Warne admitted that the midfielder is on their radar this month and claimed he could be the difference in the race for promotion in an interview with The Star.

"He's of interest to us. I really like him. He's been out of football for a bit of time so whoever does land him has got to do a bit of fitness work with him. I don't think he's a signing you could bring in and put straight into the squad. It's a month's job or whatever.

"I will endeavour to get him. If you can get a fit Ben Marshall for the last 10 games of the season that could be the difference between going up or not."

The Millers are currently sat second in the League One table, and will be hoping they can keep up the pressure on league leaders Wycombe Wanderers as they head into the second-half of this year's campaign.

Rotherham are next in action on Saturday when they take on Oxford United, in what is certain to be a tricky test for Paul Warne's side.

How much can you remember about Rotherham's 2011/12 season?

The Verdict:

This would be somewhat of a coup for the Millers if they pulled this deal off.

Marshall has experience of playing in the Championship with a number of clubs, and I think he'd be an excellent signing for any League One side.

Rotherham currently occupy one of the automatic promotion place in the third tier, and you have to feel that if they could add Marshall to their squad, then they'd have a serious chance of making a swift return to the Championship.
