Rotherham United are reportedly keen on signing St Johnstone full-back Shaun Rooney ahead of the 2021/22 campaign, according to The Daily Record.

Rooney is heading into the final year of his contract with the Scottish side, but it remains to be seen as to whether he'll see out his current deal with them amid interest from the Millers.

The defender signed for St Johnstone back in 2020, and has gone on to make 39 appearances in total for the Scottish outfit, who finished fifth in the Scottish Premiership last season.

He could potentially be tempted by a move to the New York Stadium with Rotherham as well, with the Millers looking to win promotion back into the Championship at the first time of asking this term.

Paul Warne's side were relegated from the second tier last term, as their draw against Cardiff City on the final day of the season wasn't enough to see them survive in the Championship.

The Millers are evidently keen to add to their squad this summer, with Rooney being one of those targeted, as they plan for the new league campaign.

Rotherham are set to take on Plymouth Argyle in their opening fixture in the 2021/22 campaign, in what could potentially be a tricky test for Warne's men.

The Verdict:

This is a deal that could prove to be a shrewd move by the Millers.

Rooney has clearly impressed them whilst at St Johnstone, and he could be worth the punt for the Millers, as they look to add much-needed depth into their defensive options.

With the full-back only having one year remaining on his contract as well, it's a deal that could come at a cheaper price for Rotherham, which will be pleasing to see.

If they can add a few more players to their squad over the summer, then it wouldn't come as much of a surprise to see them challenging for promotion back into the Championship at the first time of asking.
