Rotherham United have entered the race to sign in-demand Accrington Stanley forward Dion Charles with the Millers looking at the possibility of adding him to their squad, per The Sun on Sunday (23/05/2021, p59).

Charles has been one of the best performing forwards in League One this season and fired in 19 goals for Accrington in his 42 league appearances.

That has seen him start to attract a significant amount of interest and it has been reported by The Athletic that Nottingham Forest are keen on making a potential move for him this summer.

There have also been further reports from The Sun that Derby County, Cardiff City and Huddersfield Town are also potentially keen to bring in the 25-year-old. That same report outlined that Charles is being valued at around £1.5 million by Accrington.

According to the latest report from The Sun on Sunday (23/05/2021, p59), Rotherham are now also keen on looking at a potential move for Charles this summer.

That comes with Michael Smith having emerged on the radar of Middlesbrough and the Millers might need someone to replace him with for next term.

The Verdict

Charles would be something of a coup for the Millers, he has been excellent for Accrington this season and would seem to be someone that pretty much guarantees 15 plus goals in League One. That is a potential addition then that could make all the difference for them in terms of their bid to earn promotion once again under Paul Warne.

However, it is hard to see them being able to afford the £1.5 million or so valuation by Accrington given the finances in football at the moment and their relegation to League One. Although that might well change if they were to receive good money for players like Smith that may move on this summer.

While the fact that Charles has Championship interest means that the Millers might struggle to convince him to remain in the third tier with them. Having said that, Rotherham is a club that would be able to offer him the chance to lead a side to promotion and that would only enhance his reputation.
