Rotherham United have confirmed that club captain Richard Wood has signed a new contract extension, keeping him with the Millers until June 2021.

The Millers are currently flying high at the top of League One after their 3-2 win at home to Burton Albion on Saturday thanks to two goals from Michael Smith and a winner from Freddie Ladapo in the second half.

The triumph now puts them three points clear of Wycombe Wanderers at the top of the table and the news gets better for Rotherham fans as their club captain, Richard Wood, has committed to a new contract, keeping him at the AESSEAL New York Stadium until next summer.

The 34-year-old has been an important member of their side this season, donning the armband and featuring in 17 league games this season, scoring three times. The centre-back has been an important part of Rotherham’s recent history, scoring twice at Wembley to clinch promotion to the Championship for the Millers back in 2018.

The fan favourite’s contract was due to expire at the end of this season but he has been rewarded for his solid performances of late with a new deal, keeping him on for another year.

Wood is the club’s current longest-serving player having made 143 appearances, in which he has scored 15 goals.

Do you know where these ex-Millers are playing now?

The verdict

Wood has deserved a new deal after his showings this season and it’s smart business to tie him down for an extra year.

The Millers are looking towards another promotion back to the Championship and Wood’s experience will be vital for the end of this season, along with being in the second tier next year potentially.

While Wood might not be playing every single game under Paul Warne, it would be foolish to allow him to leave at the end of the season for nothing.

At 34-years-old, Wood is probably eager to see out his playing career at the New York Stadium, and this contract is a great move from the club to reward his efforts.
