Sky Bet League One side Rotherham United have completed the signing of Plymouth Argyle striker Freddie Ladapo for a club-record fee, the club have now confirmed.

Paul Warne has been considerably active in the transfer window following his side's relegation from the Championship last season, with Shaun MacDonald and Carlton Morris arriving from Wigan and Norwich respectively.

But the Millers have swooped to complete their blockbuster signing of the window thus far, signing prolific forward Ladapo on a three-year deal, for a club-record fee believed to be in the region of around £500,000.

The former Crystal Palace man signed for Plymouth from Southend United last summer, and scored an impressive 19 goals in a total of 49 appearances for the Pilgrims last term.

But following their relegation to League Two, Argyle will have been almost resigned to losing their star-striker, with Sunderland also being credited with an interest in the prolific front-man.

But the Yorkshire club have now beaten the Black Cats to the signing, in a big-money deal that surpasses the £400,000 fee they paid for winger Jon Taylor from Peterborough in 2016.

The Verdict

This is a massive statement of intent by Rotherham United, as the Millers look to win promotion back to the Championship at the first time of asking next season.

Ladapo is a proven striker at League One level, and it was almost inevitable that he would leave Plymouth after they were relegated to League Two, as he is too good to be playing in the fourth tier.

He's quick, strong and powerful and loves to get in behind, and plenty of fans will back him to score goals for fun next season.

They certainly needed another forward, with defender Semi Ajayi leading the goal-scoring charts with eight strikes last season!
