Championship newcomers Rotherham United are on the verge of signing experienced striker Tom Eaves, according to HullLive.

The Millers suffered a cruel blow earlier this week by losing two key players in the form of Michael Ihiekwe and Michael Smith to Sheffield Wednesday - the latter bringing up a vacancy for a target man at the New York Stadium.

And Paul Warne is set to fill that gap with a player he knows very well, having been on the coaching staff of the club when Eaves arrived on loan from Bolton Wanderers in 2013, however he failed to score a league goal in his short stint.

Eaves has spent the last three years at Hull City, where he scored 14 times in 97 league appearances for the Tigers, with 31 of his outings coming in the Championship this past season.

Five goals in the second tier were plundered by Eaves, and now he looks set to stay in the Championship with the Millers, having visited the club earlier this week ahead of the move.

The Verdict

It was perhaps a surprise that Hull have not kept Eaves around as a back-up option as he was effective at times for them this past season.

The Tigers are looking to evolve though and for where new owner Acun Ilicali wants to be, they cannot carry passengers along the way.

Rotherham though need a player exactly in the mould of Michael Smith - someone who is as strong as an ox and can hold the ball up, and that's what Eaves brings.

If he can find his scoring instinct like he had at Gillingham a few years ago then that will be even better, but this would be a risk-free addition to the Millers squad for Paul Warne.
