Rotherham United boss Paul Warne has admitted that he and his side want to see the season restarted for the same reasons as Leeds United.

Leeds sit top of the Championship and just nine games away from a Premier League return, whilst Rotherham are in a similar position a division below; second to only Coventry City and looking for an instant return to the second-tier.

It remains to be seen what is done with the remaining games of the 2019/20 season as global health takes priority over sport.

Reports over the past week have suggested that the EFL season will not be played to a conclusion, but teams could still be rewarded with promotion.

On the topic of where things go, Warne told the Yorkshire Post: “Whatever happens, there will be a problem.

“I think the difficulty is that whoever you interview has a bias. Watford and West Ham have come out and said they don’t think they should re-start.

“But there has to be a part of your brain that thinks: ‘with the position, you are in, I can understand that.’

“In that way, we want to re-start and Leeds do. Of course, we do – we are both having good seasons and want to go up.

“But if they do call the season off – which is as likely as unlikely at the minute, let’s be fair – it is just about what is the fairest way, really.”

As stated, Rotherham are looking to make an instant return to the division they were relegated from 12 months ago, whilst across in West Yorkshire, Leeds are looking to end their Championship stay by winning promotion back to the Premier League, where they haven’t competed since 2004.

The Verdict

For Rotherham and Leeds, they’ve played 75% of the season and they will feel their efforts so far deserve to be rewarded.

However, you will not please everyone, which Warne accepts, but coming up with a ‘fair’ solution feels the best shout.

Promotion, but no relegation, feels the option – if the season can’t be resumed.
