Rotherham United boss Paul Warne feels that there is no benefit to the League One season concluding, citing the financial implications it will have on certain clubs.

As things stand, Rotherham sit second in the League One table and if things are curtailed then decided on Points Per Game, the Millers would secure a route back into the Championship on sporting merit.

However, things remain up in the air in terms of League One completing, with the two divisions above the third-tier really stepping up towards a restart.

The 7 question Rotherham United quiz – Can you get all 7 correct?

For Warne, though, the finances involved in League One mean there’s little point resuming.

He openly told The Athletic: “There’s no benefit for us to play on. It sounds awful, but from a finance point of view I just don’t see it.

“I could be wrong, we could get told on Tuesday we’re coming back.”

The League One promotion race is an intense one and Rotherham’s position is a good one, but they aren’t nailed on for the top-two if things resume.

Coventry City sit top of the table, five points clear of Rotherham. The Millers are two ahead of Oxford United, who on 60 points, sit alongside Portsmouth and Fleetwood Town.

Then, Peterborough United, Sunderland and Wycombe Wanderers are sixth, seventh and eighth, having picked up 59 points so far.

The Verdict

Whatever the decision on the season in League One, there’s going to be some upset parties.

Warne’s stance is one that’s to be expected and although he’s argued about the finances involved, you’ve got to wonder whether he’d be saying the same thing if his side were in the position of Sunderland and Peterborough.

It’s easy to forget, but the jump in finances from League One into the Championship is a big one and there’s a lot at stake here.
