Rotherham United are by no means a fashionable team when you look at the glitz and the glamour of some of the sides in the Championship.

But what they are is effective. They know what works for them and they do it well.

Paul Warne, a former player at the club, is entrusted with keeping finances steady and offering positive results on the pitch.

The Millers’ style is not to go out and smash transfer records every window, but they have an approach that works for them.

It is a smart way of operating in the transfer window to allow them to add but not rock the boat regarding spending beyond their means.

Typically, Rotherham look to sign talent from the lower leagues, League One and Two and work with the player to improve them individually as well as bringing them in to make the squad better as a whole.

It is a sustainable model for a club who generally bounce between the second and third tier.

It is the norm for a club of Rotherham’s size.

But they need to break away from that from time to time and change their approach.

If the Millers want to sustain Championship football, improve and push on, they must change tack to be able to compete with some of the other sides around them in the division.

That is not to say go out and blow a tonne of cash on one or two players - that is not how Rotherham operate.

Their transfer policy of lower-league talent needs to be altered and amended to allow them to spend a little more and look to sign other players further up the food chain to enable them to progress.

One player that immediately springs to mind is Bright Enobakhare of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 20-year-old is currently on loan at Scottish Premier League side Kilmarnock for six-months and will be arriving back at Molineux in the New Year.

In all honesty, the standard of the SPL is less than that of the Championship and it is doing his development no favours being there.

Wolves are a side who look like they could be Premier League mainstays for years to come and with the money at their disposal, Enobakhare’s future there might be under serious threat.

Rotherham need to pounce on this crossroads the attacker finds himself in.

The Millers have scored 13 goals this year in 16 matches - that is the second worst goal return in the division.

Goals win games and that all ultimately aid their survival hopes.

Enobakhare is a powerful attacker, who is very strong at dribbling and carrying the ball forward.

Along with that, he is adept at laying the ball off and playing short, snappy passes.

He is a forward-thinking player that can hold the play up and bring others in before using his pace to get beyond his marker.

Enobakhare’s time in Scotland has not gone to plan much having only played in six matches since his summer loan north of the border.

Completing 90 minutes twice, his loan deal has not been a success, through no fault of his one.

Moving back down to England and a move to Rotherham would see him be able to play consistently for the Millers to build up his confidence and show his ability once and for all.

Game time at Wolves looks non-existent, and you would imagine he will be shipped out of Molineux once more in January.

Rotherham should be front and centre of the queue there will undoubtedly be for his services in the New Year.

Changing their transfer tack could change their fortunes and allow them to flourish in the Championship for years to come, rather than returning to it every other year.
